FANTASTIC GOTLAND

Welcome to Gotland – the pearl of the Baltic Sea

Gotland is Sweden's largest island – a magical destination for those seeking nature, history, swimming, culture and relaxation all in one place. An island that feels like its own little country – right in the middle of the sea. And the best part? There's something here for everyone – families with children or seniors alike.

Getting here is easy: by the comfortable Destination Gotland ferries from Oskarshamn or Nynäshamn, or by flight from Stockholm/Arlanda.

The island has a rich and fascinating history. In the Middle Ages, Gotland was one of Northern Europe's most important trading centres, with Visby flourishing as a Hanseatic town. But in summer 1361, everything changed: the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag landed with his army and conquered Gotland in a bloody campaign. Over 1,800 Gotlandic farmers died in the battle before the walls of Visby – one of the island's most tragic episodes, now vividly documented in the Gotland Museum.

But Gotland is also a place of modern stories: many famous Swedish crime fiction characters were created here – like Anders Knutas by Mari Jungstedt and Maria Wern by Anna Jansson. Both have been successfully adapted for film and television. Maria Wern is especially popular in Germany – the atmospheric settings and gripping cases captivate viewers.

And for the little ones (or the young at heart): Pippi Longstocking! Her real house, the Villa Villekulla, is here on Gotland and is a must-visit for fans.

VISBY – A WORLD-CLASS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Visby – a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Visby is the island's largest town and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. A striking city wall surrounds the town, with narrow streets and roses climbing the walls. Since 1995, Visby has been an official UNESCO World Heritage Site – and rightly so.

Here past and present blend perfectly: in Visby you can enjoy excellent dining, discover small boutiques, visit museums, or simply enjoy the unique atmosphere over a coffee.
